I’ll let you read all the way through, but one last bit that seems pretty important is the tag spamming discussion all the way at the bottom. Basically the point is that if you let the user owning the content tag their own stuff, they will end up spamming the tagging engine in the first place. Surprisingly, the author doesn’t point out that you can essentially do a PageRank-like algorithm in which people tag URLs on and off their site, and you use the standard techniques to find spammers. Just as Google doesn’t respect sites that only link to themselves without others pointing at them, you could find the same level of “tag strength” through similar techniques.
